The primary role of the Vocational Nurse (LVN) is to provide
nursing care to clients who are experiencing common health problems with
predictable outcomes. With continuing education and experience, the LVN might
provide care for clients having more complex health problems. LVNs practice
under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician and are usually
hired as staff nurses in hospitals. However, in long-term care, many LVNs hold
management positions such as Assistant Director of Nursing, Nurse Educator, or
Clinical Supervisor. Many LVNs are employed in home health agencies, clinics or
physician offices and some practice as faculty in LVN training programs.
This 52-week certificate program teaches the skills and
information needed to test with the Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure as a
Vocational Nurse. Students will learn proper patient care, medical terminology,
medication administration, body systems, body growth and development, patient
care assessment, and nursing procedures. Upon attaining their licensure as a
vocational nurse, students can obtain employment in hospitals, nursing homes,
doctors' offices, jails and home health agencies.
