Dr. Charlita Shelton
Executive Director, DNI
Dr. Charlita Shelton has brought to Dallas Nursing Institute a deep well of professional knowledge and experience in advancing higher education institutions, which she utilizes to lead the development of DNI’s strategic vision, spearheads institutional operations to enhance student success, and cultivates new mission-related opportunities.

Dr. Shelton has previously served as president of the University of the Rockies – where she was also named President Emerita. Across academia she has also held roles that included leadership of nursing programs, and such positions as associate vice president for academic affairs, organizational diversity officer and regional executive director.

Her keen expertise in matrixed education systems coupled with her unbridled commitment to students, academic quality, and access to education position her well to extend DNI’s reach and impact on the local, regional, and national stages.

Dr. Shelton holds a master’s degree in Education from National University and a Ph.D. in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University.

 

Gwen Gaston, M.S.N., R.N.
Dean of Nursing

As of September 1, 2016, Gwen Gaston was appointed the new Dean of Nursing at Dallas Nursing Institute. Gwen oversees all academic programs offered by the institution. Ms. Gaston holds a diploma in nursing from Kings County School of Nursing (Brooklyn College of CUNY), Master of Science and Bachelor of Sciences degrees in Nursing from the University of Phoenix, Southfield, MI, and she is currently working toward her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Capella University, Minneapolis, MN.

Prior to becoming Dean, she had been the Interim Dean of Nursing and Director of Nursing for the Associate Degree of Nursing Program.

She began her affiliation with the Dallas Nursing Institute in December 2007, serving initially as an instructor and then as Assistant Director of Nursing Laboratories. She was appointed as the Associate Degree of Nursing Program Director in December 2010, with responsibility for administering the program, supervising faculty, and fostering community relations to ensure quality clinical experiences for the student nurses. She is a registered nurse. She has many years of experience as a charge nurse, intensive care staff nurse, manager and senior director of ambulatory clinical services, interim director of urgent care, and as a nurse educator.

 

Brigit Mattix, M.A.
Director of Administration and Student Affairs

Brigit Mattix joined the Dallas Nursing Institute leadership team in December 2015. She has 13 years of experience in higher education administration having served as an Admissions Counselor, Assistant Director and Director of Admissions, and most recently Director of Student Services. She comes to DNI from Argosy University where she served as Director of Student Services for the last six years. Here at DNI, she is responsible for leading programs from enrollment to graduation and beyond; including student services, retention, registration, career services, alumni and community engagement. Her administrative duties bridge all areas from facilities, information technology to budgeting. Brigit holds a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Administration with an emphasis in Leadership.

 

Michelle Berndt
Sr. Director of Admissions

Michelle Berndt joined the Dallas Nursing Institute in September 2016 from the College of Health Care Professionals where she was the Corporate Director of Admissions/Corporate Trainer. She has more than 10 years of admissions experience mainly in the Dallas Metro-plex where she has managed multiple campuses and implemented wide scale community outreach programs.

In her role she provides leadership to the enrollment processes across all programs and supervises the Admissions Counselors. Partnering with our marketing and other admissions colleagues, she manages the outreach and lead flow for enrollment. She leads community outreach efforts supporting our brand and program enrollments.
